Lowercase the military vehicle.

Capitalize references to the trademarked four-wheel-drive civilian vehicle.

Jehovah’s Witnesses

The denomination was founded in Pittsburgh in 1872 by Charles Taze Russell. Witnesses have no formal titles but these levels of ministry: publishers (members who do evangelical work), regular pioneers (who devote more time to evangelism) and special pioneers (full-time workers).

Christianity’s central figure is called Jesus or Jesus Christ or Christ by followers. Use lowercase personal pronouns to refer to him.

Jew

Because a Jew is sometimes considered pejorative when applied to an individual, say instead that he or she is Jewish. Don’t use Jewess.

Jewish congregations

Each Jewish synagogue or temple is autonomous, with no hierarchies to control its activities. In the U.S., the Synagogue Council of America in New York coordinates the activities and interrelations of the three basic expressions of Judaism:

Orthodox Judaism. Its national bodies are the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America and the Rabbinical Council of America.

Conservative Judaism. Its national bodies are the United Synagogue of America and the Rabbinical Assembly.

Reform Judaism. Its national bodies are the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

TITLES: The only formal titles in the U.S. are rabbi, for the spiritual leader of a congregation, and cantor, for the individual who leads the congregation in song. Use the titles on each reference: Rabbi Jeffrey Beller of Congregation Beth Shalom, Rabbi Beller, the rabbi, the spiritual leader of the congregation. Cantor Roberta Gardner, Cantor Gardner, the cantor.

Chief rabbi and grand rabbi are used in some countries for the national leaders. Capitalize them when they are used as titles immediately before a name. See religious titles.
